Coca-Cola National Championships Concluded

AFL PNG have successfully completed the 2012 Coca-Cola National Championships in the cities of Lae and Kimbe.

The Southern, Highlands and Northern regions gathered over the weekend of 9-11 November at the IGAM Barracks in Lae. Under 13,15 and 17 boys and Under 17 girls played a series of matches for selection in national squads for 2013. They also participated for the Coca-Cola Shield; a trophy for the best-performed region – on and off the field.

Winner of the 2012 Coca-Cola Shield was the Northern Thunders Region. Northern Region Manager – Connie Popau said: “It was a great thrill for the boys and girls to win this trophy in their home town. We have a healthy respect for the guys from the Highlands and down Port Moresby way, so it was just a great feeling for all in the north to win this award.”

During the carnival, Coca-Cola Amatil General Manager, Peter Carey called in to present a sponsorship cheque to new AFL PNG General Manager – Murray Bird. Coca-Cola Amatil have sponsored AFL PNG programs for over ten years, and Mr Carey announced at the carnival that Coke would be extending that relationship until the end of 2014. Coke have increased their commitment to Australian Rules football to $150,000 kina per annum between 2012-14.

AFL PNG General Manager – Murray Bird – thanked Coke for their fantastic ongoing support. He said: “Coke’s support has played a huge part in the pathway of many talented Papuan AFL footballers. The best recent example of course is the signing of Highlands boy – Gideon Simon – by the Richmond Tigers Football Club. Gideon is a product of the Coke sponsored AFL PNG Academy – based at Bomana De La Salle Secondary School.”

The championships were also attended by AFL Asia/Pacific Manager – Andrew Cadzow and his development officer – Ben Drew. Joining the contingent was national Mosquitoes coach – David Lake. Lake, Cadzow and Drew were more than impressed with the talent on display.

Lake said: “I am particularly excited by what I have seen in the Under 16 squad for next year. I see no reason why many of these boys can’t follow in the footsteps of Gideon Simon; as long as they remain dedicated and, like Gideon, remain committed to AFL PNG programs.”

Owing to transportation difficulties the Islands region conducted their championships in Kimbe on 17-18 November. Ben Drew and Murray Bird worked with Islands officials to conduct a series of matches that have resulted in the addition of many boys and girls to national squads.

Selections have been made for the Under 14 and Under 16 Binatang teams to travel to Australia in 2013.

Selections for the Under 17 Kurrukum Girls team; Open Women’s Flames team; and Under 18/19 Kapundas will be announced prior to Christmas.

Australian Scholarships and 2013 Academy intake will also be announced in the coming weeks.
